Guest post vs. link insertion cost

Guest posts (GPs) and link insertions (LIs) are some of the most popular ways to gain backlinks. While they have their own pros and cons, one of the key decision factors for many businesses is the budget they need to allocate.

So, what is the average price for each of them in 2026?

  • On average, you’d have to pay $459 for a guest post.
  • And $225 for a link insertion (niche edit).

What about the price difference?

Link insertions are about 56% cheaper than guest posts across all DR tiers (on average).

Interestingly, link insertions become progressively cheaper compared to guest posts at higher DR levels. At DR 71+, LIs are around 69%-79% cheaper than GPs.

Domain Rating (DR) is one of the most important factors that influence the backlink price. We knew this even before doing our research. And let’s be honest, you probably did, too.

Yet, have you ever asked yourself how much of an extra you should pay for a couple of those additional “DR points” your donor website has? That’s a reasonable question, and we’ve found out what the backlink market has to say about it.

First, let’s see what the average submission cost is based on the DR of the donor site:

How DR affects link building prices stats research

So, on average, you can expect the website to charge the following:

  • A low-DR website (DR 1-30): $332 per link;
  • A mid-DR website (DR 31-70): $555 per link;
  • A high-DR website (DR 71+): $2,025 per link.

Now, what about traffic?

We compared pricing for websites with 1K traffic and those with 10K+. The difference is clear: depending on the DR, you can expect to pay anywhere from $50 to $350 more for websites with higher organic traffic.

How traffic affects backlink pricing stats research

What influences link-building price more: DR or traffic? Let’s check.

On average, each additional 10 DR points increases backlinks cost by about 32%.

DR impact on backlink pricing stats research

And when it comes to traffic, websites with 10K monthly traffic tend to charge about 21% more for guest posts than websites with 1K traffic.

But pages in some DR ranges will charge more than the average (26%-31%). This is particularly true for the mid-range websites (DR 41-70):

So, overall, DR affects prices more than traffic (32% vs. 21%).

So, overall, the average backlink price in core English-speaking markets (the US, the UK, Canada, Australia, and Ireland) is about 50% higher than the global average.

The fact that prices in New Zealand are lower is probably due to a smaller SEO market. Besides, most likely, fewer global brands target New Zealand specifically. Still, this is just a hypothesis.

4. HOW THE LOCATION AFFECTS LINK INSERTION COSTS

After analyzing link insertion offers in over 180 countries, here are the most affordable and the most costly locations.

The cheapest countries for link insertions:

  • Romania: $136 per link (40% cheaper than the average)

  • Indonesia: $163 (28% cheaper)

  • Ireland: $647 (188% more expensive)

The guest post pricing gap: Asking vs. real transaction prices

One of the most surprising findings in our research wasn’t the price itself. It was the gap:

  • The average price website owners list is $929 per backlink.
  • But the average that people typically pay is $207 per link.

Most buyers simply choose cheaper placements. As a result, on average, selling prices are nearly 300% higher than the real buying price. Meaning websites list backlinks at roughly 4x the typical transaction price.

And the higher the DR, the wider this gap becomes.

The guest post pricing gap Asking vs. real transaction prices

Of course, many people pay the premium, sometimes five figures for a single backlink.

Still, as we have data on tens of thousands of transactions, we see the overall trend: when users choose a website for SEO and basic PR links, they tend to go for cheaper offers.

That’s why across all DR levels, niches, and traffic ranges, the average price paid is 186%-630% lower than the average asked price.

Bottom line

As usual, this research wasn’t meant to set any sort of benchmark. We simply want to keep you informed about the general trends in the link-building pricing.

Now, we have a couple of questions for you:

  • What was the most surprising discovery?
  • And what other details would you like to see in the future?

We’d really love to hear from you. And other than that, see you next year with Adsy Link Building Pricing Report (2027).
